This experimental planting was commissioned for a private residential community garden in Haggerston, East London.
Designed to explore low-maintenance, drought-tolerant planting in an urban context, the scheme was installed in May 2024.
The planting palette features species that thrive in full sun and free-draining soil. Slate mulch was used to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and provide a stark, mineral contrast to the soft textures of the plants. The garden was only watered for the first six months after planting. Since November 2024, it has relied entirely on rainfall.
The project serves as a testbed for resilient planting in response to changing climate conditions and urban water restrictions.
