The clients, a young couple, wanted a wildlife-friendly garden with a naturalistic gravel garden aesthetic that would feel connected to their home while supporting biodiversity.
Existing paving slabs were creatively repurposed and integrated with new gravel surfaces and planting to create a cohesive, sustainable landscape. A gentle, meandering layout encourages exploration through a sequence of interconnected spaces, creating a sense of discovery while maintaining clear visual links between the house, dining area, seating space, and studio. Framed views from the kitchen, dining room, and lower ground hallway were carefully considered to enhance the experience of the garden throughout the seasons. A feature water bowl provides a focal point while offering an important resource for local wildlife.
The planting design was inspired by wildflower meadows and woodland rides, responding to the site’s moisture-retentive soil conditions. A low-maintenance, climate-resilient, and wildlife-friendly planting scheme was developed to create a relaxed and naturalistic atmosphere. A diverse mix of ornamental grasses, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials provides texture, movement, seasonal interest, and valuable habitat throughout the year.
The overall design creates an immersive gravel garden that balances beauty, functionality, and ecological value, providing a tranquil outdoor space that seamlessly extends the living areas of the home while encouraging wildlife to thrive.
This garden was completed in May 2026 so still growing before it reaches its full potential.
